Q&A with Cameron Williams, PE, PTP, PTOE
What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing engineering?
Understand the principals behind what you do and ask lots of questions. You cannot memorize your way through life. If you want to be a good engineer you have to understand the “why” so that when a problem arises which does not have a text book answer, you can lean upon the principals and your judgment to provide a solution.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Probably a baseball player, we played a lot of baseball growing up; however, that wasn’t mean to be so my love of math, science, and understanding how things work lead me to engineering.
Describe your role in traffic engineering at BBI.
I work to solve existing traffic problems and help alleviate future ones. It is my job to help people get to and from their destination safely and efficiently. If we are doing our job right, you probably never know it because you take the signs, pavement markings, signal timings, and roadway geometry for granted. It is only when things do not work that people realize what we do day in and day out makes their life a little better.
Who is your biggest role model?
My parents. They taught me many great things and the list is long. Some lessons which I really appreciate now is a good work ethic, the value of hard work, the importance of doing a job right, and being proud of what you do. They lived and continue to live those values which can be hard to find in today’s society.
