BBI Attends 2018 ASCE Texas Student Symposium

Eleanor Rivera, PE (ASCE Brazos Branch President), Brandon Boatcallie, PE, and Greg Lanting, PE (ASCE Brazos Branch Vice President) of BBI’s College Station office attended the 2018 ASCE Texas Student Symposium April 11-14th at Texas A&M University. The Student Symposium hosts the annual Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions for the Texas-Mexico Region of ASCE and is organized by the Texas A&M Student Chapter of ASCE with the help of the Professional’s Committee. This year’s theme was “SERVE: Engineers Serving the Public.” The symposium included seminars on sustainability and is focused on soft skills that support the transition from the learning environment to the professional arena.

The Brazos Branch provided volunteers and facilitated a way for professionals and students to mingle. Eleanor was responsible for organizing the speakers for the ASCE Brazos Branch professional development hours (PDHs). The guest speakers consisted of Carol Haddock, PE, Director of Houston Public Works, and Alfred Rivera, City of Houston Police Officer, who presented “Civil Engineers in Public Service” and “Managing Your Internal and External Clients,” respectively.  Greg volunteered his time on Saturday as the Concrete Canoe Safety Boat Captain and was was responsible for setting up the race course, timing, and being available to on-board anyone needing help in the water. The weather was not perfect (20+ mph gusts, swales of 3’-6’, and cool weather around 66°F), but Greg was a real trooper throughout the day!

The symposium is a great opportunity for employers to meet with 400+ students from universities from across Texas and Mexico in one place over the course of two days. The students who are participating in ASCE are some of today’s brightest civil engineering minds engaged in leadership, teamwork, and professionalism. BBI was happy to sponsor such a great event and we’re proud to have our extraordinary employees be a part of such a wonderful organization!
