BBI Joins Over 60 Teams to Compete in This Year’s 32nd Annual AIA Sandcastle Competition

BBI’s Young Professionals Group sponsored the ASCE Houston Branch team at the 32nd Annual AIA Sandcastle Competition, which took place at Galveston’s East Beach on Saturday, August 25.

This year, the event’s prestigious Golden Bucket Award went to Kirksey Architecture, a long-time site project team member of BBI’s land development subsidiary company, Landev Engineers. For the second year in a row, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Houston Branch won the award for the Best Traditional Sandcastle.

The sand sculptures are judged and rated on originality of concept, artistic execution, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site. Awards are also given in the categories of Transitional Castle, Architectural, Kidtastic! Superheroes, Pop Culture, and World History; as well as Public Favorite, Tallest Standing Structure, Greatest Feat of Structural Ingenuity, team t-shirt design, team signage, and costumes. Participating firms begin months in advance generating ideas, developing designs, and assigning job duties. On the day of the event, participants gather along the beach front to meticulously sculpt their piles of sand, working non-stop for five hours.

The AIA Sandcastle Competition is a fundraising event for AIA Houston and ArCH Foundation as well as one of the top five revenue generating events for the City of Galveston. For more information about the event, visit their website here.
