September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), which provides all of us an opportunity to prepare ourselves and our families for the possibility of natural disasters throughout the year. The devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey last year reminds us that it is never too soon to prepare for the possibility of flooding, as we are often the first responders to these events in our communities.
According to the NPM website, just one inch of flooding in your home can cause $25,000 in damage. FEMA offers online educational resources about flood risks and flood insurance options through their Floodsmart website. FEMA also offers a mobile app that delivers real-time alerts from the National Weather Service, emergency safety tips, and links to local emergency shelters and disaster recovery centers. Take this time to prepare for unexpected events by making and practicing your emergency plan. Check your insurance policies and verify that you have the coverage you need. Learn lifesaving skills like first aid and CPR. It’s never too early to prepare for a possible flood, and as NPM observes, “Disasters happen. Prepare now. Learn How.”
