National Engineers Week Spotlight: Rembert Gomez, PE

WHAT WOULD YOU CONSIDER TO BE YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS IN USING YOUR SKILLS TO SOLVE AN ENGINEERING PROBLEM?

One of my greatest successes was when I was Engineer of Record and saved millions of dollars on change orders during the construction of 302 miles of 30-inch gas pipeline due to my construction, engineering, and negotiation experience. During the construction phase, I discussed with the pipeline contractor to double-check the field site conditions to retract a change order worth a couple of million dollars for unnecessary work. As you can imagine, our client was very excited and pleased that I was able to contribute during the detailed engineering phase and in the field during the time of construction.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?

My favorite part of the job is when I go to the field to check the project site conditions and visualize the most efficient construction approach to maximize construction savings and minimize environmental impact while reaching landowners’ and clients’ goals. Nothing is more gratifying than finding a satisfactory balance within all the projects’ stakeholders.

WHAT PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU FEEL ARE NECESSARY TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ENGINEER?

Listen to all stakeholders from clients, regulatory agencies, landowners, and coworkers.

Be open-minded to think outside of the box to find paths to solve challenges.

Be committed to your goals.

Always do the right thing even when none is watching!

WHAT IS ONE THING THAT IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

I want to go to the “Tour de France.” I love road cycling; it really helps to keep your mind and body healthy.
